The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar each year. According to the “Chronicles of Festivals in Jing and Chu,” during midsummer one ascends high places, with yang energy prevailing at the summit; since the fifth month is midsummer, the first “wu” day of that month happens to be an ideal time for climbing high and embracing the yang energy. Hence, the fifth day of the fifth month is also known as the “Duanyang Festival.”
