A Letter to Uncle Gao
Editor’s Note: After reading these letters, my eyes filled with tears. Public-service work has opened a window for them, allowing them to glimpse another world and to understand the path they should take in life. They are truly fortunate!
This is a letter written by several primary school students in Zhufeng County, Hubei Province, to Gao Huoxing, Chairman of JiLi Food Group, which is truly thought-provoking.

Dear Uncle Gao:
Hello!
I am Zhou Yuandong, a student in Class 2 of Grade 5 at the Central School of Huiwan Town, and one of the members of this tour group. First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for giving me the opportunity to step out of the mountains and experience the boundless beauty of our motherland. Not only have I been treated to a feast for the eyes, but this trip has also broadened my horizons, enriched my knowledge, deepened my life experience, honed my interpersonal skills, and allowed me to forge the most sincere friendships and cherish the most cherished bonds between teachers and students.
Secondly, with your help, I have experienced many “firsts”—the first time I took a train, the first time I saw towering skyscrapers, and the first time I wandered through a bustling metropolis with my classmates and teachers, all of which I had previously only read about in books. Before, I could only imagine the splendor of the capital, the Old Summer Palace that was burned down by the Anglo-French Allied Forces, and the magnificent Summer Palace where Empress Dowager Cixi once resided—all from the pages of textbooks. Stepping out of the world of books has deepened my understanding of just how remarkable the Chinese people are. Thanks to China’s robust overall national strength, we are now able to enjoy the peace that fosters friendship between China and other countries, and together with our foreign peers, we have had the chance to experience the charm of the capital.
Finally, I would like to thank you once again. Meeting you has been my greatest fortune. Thank you for helping me make my dream come true. This trip will remain etched in my memory forever. What you have given us is love, ideals, and knowledge—far more unforgettable than a cup of warm water in the cold. I am deeply indebted to you and can offer no greater repayment than to strive for even better academic results and to work even harder as my way of expressing my gratitude.
Wishing you good health, success in all endeavors, continuous career advancement, and the fulfillment of all your wishes.

A Letter to Uncle Gao
Dear Uncle Gao:
Hello!
I am Xia Yilin, a student in Class 2 of Grade 4 at the Central School of Huiwan Town. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generous donation that made our trip to Beijing possible. Thanks to this opportunity, we were able to witness the splendor of our motherland, gain a wealth of knowledge, and come to understand the historical humiliations our country has endured. During this trip, we are especially thankful to Uncle Gao for his thoughtful care and attention. Although we did not spend much time with him, it was clear that he treated us as if we were his own family.
To be honest, this is the first time I’ve ever traveled so far from home. It’s also the first time I’ve met the Group’s General Manager. When I received that message at home, I was so excited that I couldn’t even fall asleep until late at night. This time, I got to gather with so many young friends to study together and even share a meal with you. Whenever I think back on those moments after returning home, a warm feeling fills my heart. Studying alongside my classmates has sparked a deep passion for learning in me. That’s why I’m determined to learn from you.
Finally, I’d like to say thank you to Uncle Gao. Wishing you good health and every success in your career!
Sincerely,
Salute

A Letter to Uncle Gao
Dear Uncle Gao:
Hello!
I’m Shu Zihan, a student in Class 6-1 at Huiwan Town Central School. I’m one of the members of this tour group! First and foremost, I’d like to express my sincerest gratitude and deepest appreciation to Uncle Gao for taking us—children from the remote mountains—to explore the famous landmarks and rich history of Wuhan and Beijing. We are truly grateful to you!
When the teacher told me I could go on a trip to Beijing, I was overjoyed. For us rural children, visiting the capital of our country is both an honor and a remarkable experience—after all, I had never left our mountain village before. So I readily agreed, and my parents were equally thrilled, because this wasn’t just a vacation; it was also a wonderful opportunity to learn and broaden our horizons.
With your help, we have seen the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, the Old Summer Palace—and each of these sights has stirred countless thoughts in my mind. Through the Great Wall, I glimpse the wisdom of ancient peoples; through Tiananmen Square, I behold the great rejuvenation of our motherland; and as I stand before the Old Summer Palace, I seem to both witness its former splendor and feel the scars left by its destruction. These are landmarks that, in the past, we could only encounter in our textbooks—yet thanks to your guidance, we have now had the privilege of seeing them with our own eyes.
It is common knowledge that backwardness invites aggression, so I will study hard and strive to improve every day, with the goal of becoming a person who is useful to society and to our motherland when I grow up. Thank you again! Thank you, Uncle Gao!
Wishing you smooth work and all your wishes come true!

A Letter to Uncle Gao
Dear Uncle Gao:
Hello! My name is Ye Xiaoyu, a student at the Central School of Eping Township. It is my great honor to write to you on this bright and sunny day. First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for organizing the “Hand-in-Hand Journey to Beijing for Young People from Western Hubei” activity, as well as for donating seven brand-new computers to Futai Primary School in Zhuxi County and providing scholarships, popcorn, schoolbags, and stationery to every child at the Central School of Eping Township in Zhuxi County. These generous contributions have created a warm learning environment for students in Zhuxi, inspiring generation after generation of the most admirable filial youth. I am deeply moved by your kindness and have gained renewed confidence and determination: when I grow up, I will certainly become a caring person like Uncle Gao, bringing warmth and support to children in mountainous areas!
Uncle Gao not only donates to support our education, but also organizes summer camps for us in Beijing! Among all the experiences, what I remember most vividly is the famed Great Wall. Stretching like a vigorous giant dragon, it winds and twists across the Chinese land, its grandeur both majestic and awe-inspiring. The Great Wall is a marvel created by the hardworking people of ancient China—a truly monumental feat of engineering, unparalleled in world history and second to none on Earth. Equally unforgettable is the Forbidden City. The Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony, and the Hall of Preserving Harmony are collectively known as the Three Great Halls, each exquisitely adorned with intricately carved beams and painted ceilings. Bathed in the golden light of the sun, the yellow glazed tiles gleam like scattered diamonds, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Standing here, one can truly feel the grandeur and imposing presence of the imperial palace, and cannot help but marvel at the ingenious, almost supernatural craftsmanship of the ancient artisans.
This summer camp not only allowed me to admire the beautiful sights of Beijing, but also enabled me to appreciate the diligence and wisdom of our ancient ancestors.
Here, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude once again: “Thank you! Thank you for giving us confidence and encouragement; thank you for your care for children and your concern for society! Please allow me, on behalf of our school and the entire Zhuxi County, to bow deeply to you.”
Wishing Uncle Gao: Wishing you smooth work and happiness for your whole family.
Sincerely,
Salute

A Letter to Uncle Gao
Dear Uncle Zhu:
Hello!
I am Ye Wenzhuo from Class 1, Grade 5 at the Central School of Chengguan Town, Zhuxi County. I am one of the participants in this summer camp. First of all, I would like to thank Uncle Gao Marswell and Uncle Zhu from Marswell Food Company for giving us children from poor mountainous areas the opportunity to visit big cities like Wuhan and Beijing, broaden our horizons, learn more about our motherland, and understand why we study: it is to make our country even better than it is today. I am also grateful for your care along the way and for the help we received from our teachers and classmates.
This trip has been truly rewarding. After reading your letter, I realized that, just like us, you too came from a poor mountainous region. Your story has taught me that although we cannot change our past, as long as we have a passionate love for learning, we can make our future selves even better. I believe that no matter how great the challenges we face now, we will never be defeated—we will rise to meet them and overcome them with ease. From now on, I understand the importance of being grateful to others, of giving back to them, of striving hard, of not feeling inferior, of staying true to my responsibilities, of staying focused and avoiding wavering or distraction, and of cultivating a heart that is wholly devoted to learning.
From now on, I will study hard to repay our motherland. When I grow up, I want to be a caring and compassionate person, just like you and Uncle Gao.
Wishing you: smooth work, good health, and family happiness!

Dear Uncle Gao:
Hello! First of all, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Uncle Gao for giving me this wonderful opportunity to study in Beijing. It truly has been a blessing for me. During this unforgettable study tour, I not only broadened my horizons and gained valuable knowledge, but also came to deeply appreciate the importance of learning. I was also touched by Uncle Gao’s care and concern for us, for which I am profoundly grateful. Most importantly, I’ve forged lasting friendships with my classmates.
This study tour to Beijing has been incredibly rewarding. Honestly, I’ve come to realize that knowledge truly can change one’s destiny. While we may not be able to change where we’re born, we can certainly change ourselves—by working even harder and striving to become individuals who make a meaningful contribution to society and to our country.
In conclusion, although this study tour to Beijing has come to an end, my passion for learning will never wane. Moving forward, I will devote myself wholeheartedly to my studies, approach every task with a grateful heart, embrace a spirit of selfless dedication, and uphold the quality of relentless perseverance. I will be confident yet humble, always open to learning and willing to seek guidance.
