110,000 Yuan from the Auction of a David Beckham–Signed Soccer Ball to Fund Education
12 Jun,2018
On the afternoon of June 10, a charity auction of Beckham-signed soccer balls combined with an on-site donation event was held at the East Lake Hotel in Wuhan.
The star lot in this charity auction is a soccer ball personally signed by the renowned footballer David Beckham. Mr. Gao, its owner, acquired the ball at a charity auction in 2013 for RMB 35,000. Now, four years later, Mr. Gao has decided to put the ball up for auction once again, with all proceeds earmarked for a rural primary school in the impoverished mountainous region of Zhuxi County, Shiyan City, Hubei Province—an area where he himself has firsthand witnessed traffic barriers and relatively underdeveloped education.
After a fiercely contested auction, this charity soccer ball was successfully bid for on the spot by the General Manager of Wuhan Evergrande Drinking Water Company at a price of RMB 110,000. In total, the soccer ball and 22 other auction items fetched RMB 272,000 in charitable donations during the live auction. Five representatives—officials from Zhuxi County and teachers and students—witnessed the entire auction process and accepted the donation on the spot.
According to reports, Mr. Gao, who works in the food industry, has not only donated his own soccer ball but also plans to sponsor 15 academically and morally outstanding children to travel to Beijing this summer vacation to attend the flag-raising ceremony. On the spot, he also launched a scholarship alliance, joining forces with caring entrepreneurs to provide financial support for 100 underprivileged students over the next five years.
This charity auction to raise funds for education was organized by the Hubei Provincial Radio and Television Production Center.
